The whimsical Gnome as we know it today is nothing more than a lawn ornament. Out of curiosity it is interesting to hear of the folklore that boasts of these little creatures that are often called dwarfs. They were once thought to be earth spirits, whose important job was to guard the minerals and precious metal of the earth. These are considered treasures well worth guarding. This lore started with the medieval scholar named Paracelcus as he described them as earth spirits. It is said from his story that they cannot stand the light which the sun emits for example as one ray would turn them into a statue of stone.Then there are others who say they spend the hours of the daylight as a toad.

Now European folklore paints a somewhat similar picture of the Gnome but describes him as being a goblin. Mythology has him as a small deformed hunchback creature that looks like an old man.

Leaving medieval times and coming back to the future, a Gnome is considered no more than a lawn ornament and a very whimsical one at that. They can play a very important part in the over all decor of the garden. There is much that can be done with by way of having several and arranging them so it depicts a story.

For example if you look at some of Gnomes here you will see several of them with tools. These grouped in an area of your yard that is quite rocky for example make a whole new meaning for that area. Place a few of these guys amongst the rocks and what was once an eyesore now becomes an intriguing topic of conversation.

Then perhaps you have the vegetable garden area. Many people refrain from putting in these types of gardens because they feel they are unattractive and take away from the ambience of the yard.
